چکیده

We employ a novel Monte Carlo simulation scheme to elucidate the stabilization of neutral colloidal microspheres by means of highly charged nanoparticles [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 98, 8950 (2001))]]. In accordance with the experimental observations, we find that small nanoparticle concentrations induce an effective repulsion that prevents gelation caused by the intrinsic van der Waals attraction between colloids. Higher nanoparticle concentrations induce an attractive potential which is, however, qualitatively different from the regular depletion attraction. We also show how colloid-nanoparticle size asymmetry and nanoparticle charge can be used to manipulate the effective interactions.

Phase Behavior , 3 - D Structure , and Rheology of Colloidal Microsphere – Nanoparticle Suspensions Summer K . Rhodes and Jennifer A . Lewis

A new route for tailoring the behavior of colloidal suspensions through nanoparticle additions is reviewed. Specifically, the interparticle interactions, phase behavior, 3-D structure, and rheological properties of microsphere–nanoparticle mixtures that possess both high charge and size asymmetry are described. Negligibly charged microspheres, which flocculate when suspended alone, undergo a re...

Colloidal stabilization via nanoparticle halo formation.

We present a detailed numerical study of effective interactions between micrometer-sized silica spheres, induced by highly charged zirconia nanoparticles. It is demonstrated that the effective interactions are consistent with a recently discovered mechanism for colloidal stabilization. In accordance with the experimental observations, small nanoparticle concentrations induce an effective repuls...

Effective interactions in mixtures of silica microspheres and polystyrene nanoparticles.

We investigate the effect of small concentrations of highly charged nanoparticles on the stability of uncharged colloidal microspheres using large-scale simulations. Employing pair potentials that accurately represent mixtures of silica microspheres and polystyrene nanoparticles as studied experimentally, we are able to demonstrate that nanoparticle-induced stabilization can arise from a relati...

Electrostatically tuned interactions in silica microsphere-polystyrene nanoparticle mixtures.

We explore the generality of nanoparticle haloing as a novel colloidal stabilization mechanism in binary mixtures of silica microspheres and polystyrene nanoparticles. By selectively tuning their electrostatic interactions, both the initial microsphere stability and the role of nanoparticle additions are varied. Adsorption isotherm and zeta potential measurements indicate that highly charged na...
